みのがす【見逃がす】

1 〔気づかず過ごす〕 overlook; miss; pass over [by, up]; pass 《it》 unmarked; lose sight of 《an important fact》.

●計算ミスを見逃がす overlook a miscalculation

・重要な事実を見逃がす let an important fact go unremarked

・見逃がしてはならない要点 the point to see.

●彼の目は何一つ見逃がさなかった. Nothing escaped him [his attention]. | His eyes took in everything.

・彼女は寸法のわずかな狂いも見逃がさない人だ. She's the sort of person who doesn't let the slightest error in measurement get by unnoticed.

・私はスーパーの格安品を見逃がさない. I don't miss bargain items at the supermarket.

・彼らは消費者の好みの変化を見逃さなかった. They did not fail to notice shifts in consumer taste.

2 〔見るのを忘れる〕 forget to see; 〔見る機会を逸する〕 miss a chance to see.

●映画ファンなら見逃がせない映画だ. It is a picture which no movie fan should [can afford to] miss.

・ドラマの最終回を見逃した. I missed the last episode of the TV drama.

・ゴーギャンの名画が来日します. この機会をお見逃しなく. Gauguin's great paintings are coming to Japan. Don't miss this opportunity.

3 〔とがめずにおく〕 overlook; look over; pass over 《a matter》 in silence; let 《it》 pass [go]; let sb go unchallenged [unpunished]; connive 《at…》; wink (an eye) 《at…》; blink 《a fact》; 《口》 give sb the go-by.

●違反を見逃がす overlook [gloze over] sb's infraction

・犯人を見逃がす let a wrongdoer go unchallenged

・出来心だったんです. 見逃してください. I don't know what came over me! Oh, please let me go.

・今度だけ見逃がしてやろう. I'll let the matter pass for this once.

4 【野球】 〔バットを振らない〕 let 《a good ball》 go by.

●いまの球, 見逃せばボールでしたね. If he'd let the last pitch go by, it would have been a ball, right?
